Ports

Ports are the node’s contract with its neighbours. In the editor a port label renders bold when wired and italic when optional; ports accept attachment carriers rather than data wires.

How data flows through it

Google Sheets consumes the content of the incoming envelope — when it is fed directly by a trigger, the trigger’s wrapper is unwrapped at the node boundary so the node sees the actual data, not the metadata shell. Its output becomes the payload for the next node, while the envelope (trace ids, correlation, binary refs) rides along untouched. In the Runs view you always see the whole envelope for both sides of this node.

Expressions in the config

String-typed properties accept {{ }} expressions evaluated against the incoming item at run time — e.g. {{ $json.customer.email }}. On this node that’s accessToken, spreadsheetId, range, title, sheetTitle, baseUrl. JSON- and code-typed fields never interpolate — they are passed through literally.

Using it

Append order rows (the shipped demo)

Set Operation to append, paste the Spreadsheet id, and point Range at the target tab (Orders!A:D). Then choose where the rows come from: set Values path to a field on the input (e.g. orders) and each object in that list appends as one row — keys map to columns in order. With input like

one row lands per order object. (No values path? Type rows directly into the Values JSON field — a list of lists, one inner list per row.)

For auth, pick your Google credential in the node’s credential picker — the token field then carries ${credential.google-oauth2.accessToken}, a vault reference that is resolved at run start and refreshed automatically when near expiry.

Read a range into items

read with a bounded range (Orders!A1:D50) emits the cell grid; clear empties a range.

Tips

  • OAuth client setup is the hard part — redirect URI, enabled APIs, test users and the 7-day testing caveat are walked through in the Google Sheets guide and the credentials guide.
  • USER_ENTERED lets Sheets parse "149.95" and "2026-06-12" the way typing would; RAW stores exactly the strings you send.
  • The spreadsheet id is the long path segment of the sheet’s URL (docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/<THIS>/edit).
  • Token refresh is automatic: the vault refreshes the access token whenever a run resolves a near-expiry credential — deployed apps included.
